The Cuisinart brand was developed in 1971 when a retired MIT physicist and accomplished cook Carl Sontheimer decided to delve into the highly competitive housewares business with his own company. Cuisinart commenced trading by initially importing an exclusive line of top quality stainless steel cookware.
In the meantime Sontheimer began tinkering with his prototype of a food preparation machine. He lengthened the feed tubes, improved the cutting blades and discs and added safety features to meet American standards. In 1973 Cuisinart unveiled the food processor at the National Housewares Exposition in Chicago. Over the next decade sales exploded giving the opportunity for Cuisinart to further develop its technology and stay ahead of its competitors.
